THE ART OF STORYTELLING

COURSE OUTLINE

Week 1 - The Psychology of Storytelling
In this first session you will discuss the psychology behind storytelling, its importance in children’s lives, identify key features and with another student create your own story framework. Our desire is that you not merely read stories but you acquire a passion for them. We know people become more acquainted with their possibilities when they go through the process of creating and sharing.

Week 2 - The Semantic Field
Every story has words associated with that story. The writer has to think about this as it has a bearing on the reader acceptance or rejection of the story. In what type of story would you find the words, handcuffs, robber, siren, loot and hideaway?  Connected to the semantic field is the historical background of a particular type of story. In a fairy story, the prince always gets his bride, the burglar is always caught and there are certain thing that will kill Dracula sunlight and a stake through the heart. With a partner you will identify the semantic field of your story and discuss the historical background related to it.

Week 3 - The Beginning, Middle and Ending
In this lesson we will discuss the three sections of a children’s story: beginning, middle and end and how this relates to any event in our lives. You have control of this story, what is your desired ending? How does children’s fiction differ from adult fiction? We will look at what we are trying to achieve in a Beginning Middle and End of a story. In pairs you will write a short story.

Week 4 - Reviewing Your Story
Now you have written your story review it, look at the words, do they state what you would like to say or what you mean? In pairs read each other’s stories amend it. Can sounds be added to bring it alive? Think about facial expressions to provide a visual aid.

Week 5 - Performing Your Story
Performing a story is an art. It enables your listeners to use their five senses to: see, hear, smell, taste and feel. The way you perform a story will provide a depth of understanding that is not possible by reading, your listeners may vary in language and word comprehension. We will identify a character’s idiosyncrasies, or peculiar habits, how to command a presence on stage and believe in what you are doing. This session is often a turning point for many people as they question what is holding them back or find a balance in moving forward with their idea.

Week 6 - Meet Your Audience
In this lesson you will perform your story in front of an audience, both adults and children, using all of the skills and techniques that you have been learning.  An opportunity to get some positive feedback
