By the 1990s Sterling had started his own production company ‘Size Ten studio‘ and was putting out some of the best underground hip-hop around London at the time. The ability to sing as well as rap helped Sterling to perfect his own technique, and before long Size Ten were blowing up on the live seen, doing gigs up and down the UK. In 1993 he formed part of a four man team consisting of two rappers, Sterling and Ray-Ray and two producers (Richard Marcangleo & Davie Boyle) to form street beat U.K. which in turn led to a major recording deal with Polydor (Urban Label)), and this led to Sterling’s first major release ‘From Be-Bop to Hip-Hop’, which spent six weeks at number one on Choice FM, and came into the national charts at ninety-six. Though not a major success, it was enough to fuel the desire to continue, which subsequently resulted in further releases eg ‘Hard Work‘ and ‘Do What You Got‘. The success of Street Beat U.K. helped to fund Size Ten productions, which was very much still alive and doing well in its own right, as leading to a collaboration with singing Diva, Sybil, on the Bill Withers cover of ‘Lovely Day‘ (Producer: Mike Burnett of DeF-Jam records); this reached number one in the German charts. |
