Week 1 - 9th Feb: The Craft of Writing Get your creative juices flowing and learn how far you can take yourself. Start with writing exercises that will get you in the mood for limitless thinking and all the different ways to express yourself through words. Then, be given some basic tools in any writer’s arsenal to take your thoughts further and give them a well-defined voice. Learn how to powerfully communicate with others by understanding such things as narratives, pacing, word metre, metaphors, etc. Come together in groups to work with others on a life-size magnetic poetry project and be given a weeklong assignment to start using your skills to create your own work. Week 2 - 16th Feb: Review and Feedback Using the skills learned from week one, start with word and vocal exercises that later on help you to perform your first piece of writing in a safe and supportive environment. Receive helpful constructive feedback from both your instructor and classmates that will take your work further and give it more definition and end with group participation in furthering your understanding of speech and delivery. Week 3 - 23rd Feb: Understanding Delivery This week's sessin will start by listening to some examples of spoken word performers to get a sense of styles and delivery. Then, further your understanding by learning the mechanics of speaking in front of your audience and how to use rhythm to really make people “feel” your work. Such topics will include word flow, intonation, accentuation, alliteration, easy tricks for memorization, and body language. At the end of the class you’ll be given an assignment for the following week to perform your piece, and get a deeper audio sense of your delivery. Week 4 - 2nd Mar: Introduction to Working with Music Start off the week by performing your piece and getting a sense of you and your classmates different styles. Receive useful feedback on your delivery and then learn the basic of how to blend your performance with music. By working with a percussionist, learn how the rhythm of words can be used with the beat of music and try your hand in matching your own work with a particular musical rhythm provided by our in house musician. Afterwards, pick a piece of instrumental music, provided by your instructor, and use it during the week to practice blending your words to music. Week 5 - 9th Mar: Working Further with Music and Musicians In the beginning of class perform your work with the music given to you in the previous week, having the confidence now to not only perform comfortably but letting the spontaneity of the moment take your work in new directions. Afterwards, learn how to work with a group of musicians, including how to direct those who may have never worked with spoken word artists before. Discover how the dynamics of different instruments and melodies can be used to enhance the meaning of your performance, and how it can give you ideas to take your piece further. Most importantly, however, learn to relax and live in the moment, allowing your work to be really dynamic and take on different deliveries based on varied performance environments. Week 6 - 16th Mar: The Business of Spoken Word In the final week of the course, learn the things that most writing classes fail to deliver. Discover the real life arena that makes up the business of writing and performing. Learn about different spoken word events around London and their varied venues, as well as how to safe guard the ownership of your work through copyright. Look at different medias on how to showcase your work and get tips on how to publish your first chapbook to use as a portfolio or to sell online or at performances.
