Looking Back and Looking Forward

Acoustically Speaking is all about sharing the love and supporting each other, whether we are artists who&rsquo;ve been working at it for a long time, or emerging artists getting up on the stage for the very first time. This month was no exception and, amidst the usual fun and banter, there was some real deep food for thought streaming from some of the songs and words we were treated to.

Kocoa kicked things off as usual, playing with the always awesome Stevie Blu and the ever-smiling Jnr Keys. Kocoa reflected on the day&rsquo;s South End Food Festival that most of us had enjoyed and it seems she enjoyed it very much indeed, dedicating the song &lsquo; Here Comes That One&rsquo; to all the good looking men that had been out there enjoying the day.

Kocoa was joined by Kayo in hosting the show. It was great to see Kayo back after a break away, bringing a new element of comedy and banter to the presentation. Kayo picked up Kocoa&rsquo;s earlier theme of &lsquo;looking for love&rsquo; and &lsquo;searching&rsquo; in his set by declaring himself a single man and inviting any interested ladies in the audience to take him on a date &ndash; did you get one Kayo? Maybe I should try that next month. Kayo then went on to rap about searching for your place in life with &lsquo; What Am I Here For?&rsquo; I would say certainly for the stage. He was having a great time and bought the audience along with him for the ride.

While Kocoa and Kayo were looking for love, many other artists were reflecting on people we&rsquo;ve loved and lost in our lives. I was trying to write something funny for the night but, instead, ended up writing a poem dedicated to my amazing friend Lou, who died during November&rsquo;s Acoustically Speaking weekend. My poem shared with everyone the fact that the encouragement Lou showed me is the fuel for everything I do. Unbeknown to me, this was to be something of a theme running through the night.

Brand new singer-songwriter, Tshara, treated us to a powerful set with her amazing voice and touching lyrics. One of her songs, &lsquo;Take It Easy&rsquo; was inspired by the lessons she learned after her mum died. She bravely told us her story after she performed the song, adding that most people cry when she sings it. I know I would have been one of them if I&rsquo;d heard the story before the song so I&rsquo;ll be ready for that next time she sings, and I hope that will be very soon. Tshara is at the very start of her song writing studies and is a talent to watch out for.

We had a lot of young talent on the stage this month and another of them, the awesome rapper and poet, &lsquo;Five Star Firms&rsquo; tapped into both the main themes of the evening in his set that included a rather sexy poem about new love and a beautiful rap about his late grandma. Heartwarming stuff from a fresh voice that I&rsquo;m really looking forward to hearing more of. Fancy a slam sometime?

Five Star Firms was one of several rappers we enjoyed this month. I&rsquo;m quite a fan of rap, especially when it&rsquo;s fresh and saying something new. All the rappers we heard did just that. &lsquo;Razor&rsquo; is a rapper from Wembley who is already on the way to big things and picking up awards for his work. He gave us a thoughtful piece about the victims of knife crime with a chorus challenging all areas of London to unite and stand against it. Powerful stuff!

&ldquo;Street Swagger&rsquo; was the last of out rap acts and gave us a piece all about his, now ex, girlfriend. This was a fun piece in comparison to some of the evening&rsquo;s themes but with plenty of lines to get you thinking.

We were well and truly spoilt for talented rap artists but this is the &lsquo;Eclectic Arts Network&rsquo; so there were many more styles on offer. In stark contrast to the rappers was Coin Malmey who gave us some smooth and gentle songs in the country style. I first saw Colin as part of the group &lsquo;Creative Voices&rsquo; who grew from one of Kocoa&rsquo;s song writing workshops. I was amazed how much Colin&rsquo;s talent has grown since I saw him towards the end of last year.

Colin was joined on stage by Naz, another of the Creative Voices, and another talent that is just growing and growing. Naz joined Jnr Keys, Kocoa and Tshara in singing a special, improvised, Happy Birthday song to one of Acoustically Speaking&rsquo;s most loyal fans, Princess. The song was amazing and just goes to show what can be done when a group of people get together to create something new. I hope you had a fantastic evening Princess!

&lsquo;Grey Sierra&rsquo; was a singer-songwriter who had played earlier in the festival and who we all enjoyed so much we asked him to hang around and play again at Acoustically Speaking. He has a unique &lsquo;indie&rsquo; sound and someone else we all expect to hear a lot more of.

Another very different kind of artist was the beautiful &lsquo;Wordsmyth&rsquo;, a singer-songwriter who brings a totally unique sound combining ethereal vocals with rap. This was just her second ever gig and she already looks very at home on the stage and with her music. Keep a watch out for her because she really is doing something very new and very exciting.

Redshift are a pair of young guys who are also doing something very unique and exciting. I talked about them last month and how much they remind me of Nirvana. This month, the lead singer and guitarist was forced out of his comfort zone and onto the stage alone &ndash; a challenge for any musician, especially one so young but he more than rose to it. I really like this band and am looking forward to seeing the two of them together again next month, at In It Together.

Birdogg were another band with a unique sound and one I really enjoyed being introduced to. They play melodic songs with a country feel in the guitar line. I wanted to hear more and, after their set, Kayo asked them where we can find it. Their reply was refreshing and a challenge for us all. We&rsquo;re all so keen to get our work out there, whether it be recordings or publications, and we can often forget that we create in the first place because we love what we do. Birdogg explained that they are still working to create the sound they want and, until they have it, they haven&rsquo;t recorded it.

Another artist who left us feeling challenged was the awesome Sean Mitchell, back on the stage after playing last month. Sean combines comedy, life experience and a whole lot of wisdom in his songs and his act. Once again, we enjoyed his songs but it was the thoughts he left us with that we were all talking about and pondering well after the night was over. Sean declared that, &ldquo; The only things in life that are impossible are those we are not prepared to try!&rdquo; Hmmm, a good motto Sean and good advice for all of us who were on that stage last night. Let&rsquo;s all try everything we set our hearts on achieving.

Acoustically Speaking - Love and Laughter! 2

Acoustically Speaking for March 2012 will go down in history as a classic! We all had so much fun along side enjoying some fantastic performances. Kocoa was, as ever, in wonderful voice bringing her impressive vocal riffs and crows with style and finesse with Stevie Blue on guitar and Jnr Keys on, well, keys, and Ayesha providing the harmonies. Everyone enjoyed swinging out and getting soulful, joining in on a few old favourites. One of the things I love about this band are seeing how much they enjoy themselves. Kocoa was born for the stage and commands it while Jnr plays with the biggest grin I think I&rsquo;ve ever seen. This is a group of people who love their music and this love is infectious. Their smiles are mirrored on faces throughout the room by the time they have finished their first song.

Another lady who is totally in love with what she does is Joyce Alonyo who shared poems about her journey working with Kocoa at Imagine Create Express (ICE), having recently left to study nursing. Joyce silenced the room with her powerful words and couldn&rsquo;t leave the stage before being urged to sing with her sisters at ICE, Ayesha and Esther. There was so much love on the stage between them. Are you getting a sense of a theme running through the evening? The girls later returned to the stage to join Esther in the premiere of a new acapella song she&rsquo;d written. Everyone agreed, we want more!

Redshift are a duo whose performance blew me away. Their sound took me right back to early Nirvana in their John Peel session days. I wasn&rsquo;t expecting that! Not least because they are far too young to have been influenced by the 90s grunge scene and got their sounds from other pathways, including Jamaican grass roots music. That&rsquo;s what is so amazing about music. You put influences in the mix and you never know what you&rsquo;ll get as you invent and reinvent sounds. I&rsquo;m hoping to hear a lot more from these young men as soon as possible.

A young lady I hope to hear more of soon is the lovely Holly Roe. Holly is a talented young singer-songwriter and guitarist who performed a wonderful set of acoustic ballads. She has a unique style and, being early in her musical studies, this is a girl who looks destined for big times.

Love and Laughter! Acoustically Speaking

            There is always a huge smile on my face when I wake up on an  &lsquo;Acoustically Speaking&rsquo; Sunday. All day, I look forward to spending an  evening with old friends, making new friends and enjoying a night of  varied and talented musicians, poets and performing artists.&nbsp;

Now, I&rsquo;ve been asked to write an accompanying blog so I&rsquo;m even more excited about next month&rsquo;s Acoustically Speaking (on 15th April) and the many, many more nights to follow in the coming months and years.

Each month, I&rsquo;ll be bringing you a review of the acts we&rsquo;ve been treated to as well as getting you up to date with the news from acts we&rsquo;ve enjoyed in the past. So, if you&rsquo;ve played Acoustically Speaking in the past please do get in touch and let me know what you&rsquo;re up to now so I can feature all your news.

&nbsp;Look out for the first post coming soon...aptly titled...

Acoustically Speaking: Sunday 25th September

            So...Sunday!
Acoustically Speaking was brilliant! We had&nbsp;Delicia Edgar, for the first time, gracing the stage with backing and accapella!

This is when you know how talented our artists are: when they say they have a sore throat, hot liquid, croaking, but when they get up, belt out shocking numbers and rock the stage.&nbsp;Clarissa!

<a target="_new" href="./stevieblu.cfm">Stevie Blu&nbsp;was the legend that is... enough said.

            Taking us on the journey of relationships,&nbsp;<a target="_new" href="./jayjay.cfm">Jay Alonyo&nbsp;shared a few pieces and made up a song on the spot!&nbsp;

            Talking about poetry, Alan, improv poet, was given the subjects: Cacti, Water and Hope. I just want to say, skill and bravery!&nbsp;

We cannot fail to mention&nbsp;<a target="_new" href="./sarahdrizen.cfm">Sarah Drizen, either. Imagine a bank holiday afternoon, sitting in a park with a small but beautiful lake, willow hanging into it, then a gentle breeze seems to kiss your cheek. Sarah's voice is like that breeze. I'm not even exaggerating.

<a target="_new" href="./ratgb.cfm">Rosie and The Glass Balloon! Like the audience members were saying, there is noone like them! I think &quot;different&quot; is a perfect word. I heard one lady comment that it isnt just the random, humorous, sweet lyrical content, the music itself is really really good! I agree!

            All in all, fantastic!
            &nbsp;

Acoustically Speaking- Sunday 21st August

We were upstairs!! Hosted by Kocoa Brown and Kayo of AG Fly, this Acoustically Speaking was monumental!

<a target="_new" href="./jayjay.cfm">Jay Alonyo picked up a guitar for the first time with one of her quirky musical offerings, as well as reciting words of beauty.

This time we had, for his first ever performance in front of an audience Michael! Its opportunities like this which are at the heart of Acoustically Speaking- a platform for hidden talent, which we all know is out there! he was fantastic- well done!

The evening definitely&nbsp;felt deep and powerful with <a target="_new" href="./stevieblu.cfm">Stevie Blu and the tones of a&nbsp;BV who was brought centre stage- Andrew!

After all of the events of the past month, it was brilliant to see what Croydon has to offer, from its young people, for the future. Acoustically Speaking definitely stepped up as a banner for its beloved home town.

May it be a spot for talent, young, developing and seasoned.

Now, I'm saying this with all seriousness, because I know who is performing next month.&nbsp; BUY YOUR <a target="_new" href="./thestore.cfm">TICKETS EARLY BECAUSE ITS GOING TO BE PACKED!

Acoustically Speaking- Sunday 31st July

It was the second time we were in&nbsp;Scream Studio's Showcase Lounge ( downstairs) and it was wonderful!&nbsp; Definitely a great venue for birthdays... and we had one! Acoustically Speaking with cake is fabulous!

The line- up was amazing, as always.

<a target="_new" href="./stevieblu.cfm">Stevie Blu, <a target="_new" href="./jayjay.cfm">Jay Alonyo, Yasine, Gabrielle, Kayo of AG Fly and <a target="_new" href="./leahlongville.cfm">Leah Longville! Not to mention our impromptu artists who, we hope, will come and perform in full slots at future Acoustically Speaking events! There is definitely talent in our town!

You are&nbsp;still in time to buy <a target="_new" href="./thestore.cfm">tickets for the next Acoustically Speaking, which promises to be a stunner, an end of summer bash! &nbsp;Sunday&nbsp;21st August- Scream Studios. Not the last Sunday of the month as usual, the third Sunday, this time!

Acoustically Speaking- Sunday 26th June 2011

We had a fantastic night!

This episode of Acoustically Speaking was in the Scream Studio's Showcase Lounge ( Downstairs). We tested this out for the first time and it turned out to be fantastic, not only because we could have more candles!

We were treated to a first ever performance by brother and sister duo- Simon and Joanna. The room was dazzled by their growing, yet amazing, talent, so far!

Just when you thought they couldnt get more diverse, <a target="_new" href="./ratgb.cfm">Rosie and The Glass Balloon played a truly acoustic set, adding another facet to their diamond performances, to date!

There was a&nbsp;refreshing&nbsp;poetic offering from Mrs. Jay , <a target="_new" href="./elainejoseph.cfm">Elaine Joseph.

And we had a smooth dessert offering by <a target="_new" href="./stevieblu.cfm">Stevie Blu.

If you weren't there, I'm not going to lie- you missed out!

But you're still in time to buy <a target="_new" href="./store.cfm">tickets for the next Acoustically Speaking!- Sunday 31st July- Scream Lounge, Showcase Lounge

Accoustically Speaking- According to Jonathan

Helloooo people, if you haven't been down to Acoustically Speaking.. where have you been?? Acoustically Speaking is a unique event with a lovely vibe to get people in the mood for some spoken word, poetry, acoustic music and song!! The venue is lovely and feels so comfortable. The people are very nice and welcoming and it is very organised.. I am a poet, and it's nice to know when you are coming up and how you fit in with the night.. The EAN that run Acoustically Speaking, know just what to do and are very welcoming towards performers too.

The acts there are very good. All unique. I love because there is a wide variety of acts from singers to poets. There will be something for you if you enjoy this kind of vibe :)
If you haven't been, then you must go down and check it out. If you like positive vibes, good company and like minded people o and not to mention that the entertainment on offer :). Then go to the next Acoustically Speaking night and check it out. You will be pleasantly surprised. And I personally guarantee a good night :)

If you haven't been, then you must go down and check it out. If you like positive vibes, good company and like minded people o and not to mention that the entertainment on offer :). Then go to the next Acoustically Speaking night and check it out. You will be pleasantly surprised. And I personally guarantee a good night :)

Acoustically Speaking @ Screamfest - Bank Holiday Monday 25th April

So much happened because, this time, Acoustically Speaking began at 3pm!!

It was a hot spring day (global warming) and we had 8 fabulous artists to heat it up some more!

Debut atrists Alan Hewlett, Jonathan, Michael and Chris Sopp graced the stage with improv. poetry, spoken word and some deep tunes!

Returning artists <a target="_new" href="./jayjay.cfm">Jay Jay, <a target="_new" href="./ratgb.cfm">Rosie and The Glass Balloon, Womba and <a target="_new" href="./elainejoseph.cfm">Elaine Joseph were warmly received by a growing following of fans... emerging artists!!

Last, but not least, <a target="_new" href="./kayo.cfm">Kayo and Lil' Saint not only blessed us all with rhymes, Kayo made his debut as a host with Kocoa Brown! A definite thumbs up!

Extended performance times meant we got to see artists get deep and rock out in a way they hadn't before.

The audience: yes- there were screaming fans too... literally screaming, some of them!

This edition of Acoustically Speaking was a real testimony for the success of its objectives- to lift up and help grow, provide a platform...

Artists ranged from very first performers, EVER, to long- term members of the network, who have grown, immensely in talent and confidence and number of fans!

Let it continue!

The next Accoustically Speaking is FREE and is at a football stadium! I told you in January that we were getting big, didn't I?

LOOK OUT FOR INFO ON GETTING INVOLVED WITH YOUR ART AND ON COMING ALONG.

Acoustically Speaking- Scream Lounge- Sunday 20th March

So...

This time, Acoustically Speaking (AS) was stripped down to its roots... truly acoustic, truly intimate... still full, though! (yes we're popular!)

There were great performances from poets, <a href="./jayjay.cfm">Jay Jay and <a target="_new" href="./alainenglish.cfm">Alain English- touching and beautiful!

Up and coming band, Rosie and the Glass Balloon, did their thang, brilliantly! - ofcourse!

There were two great Solo singers:

<a target="_new" href="./sarahdrizen.cfm">Sarah Drizen tantilised the audience&nbsp;with uplifting offerings from her second album.

Esther, AKA &quot;voice of an angel&quot;, returned to the AS stage- Amen.

Both solo&nbsp;singers&nbsp;joined Kocoa Brown on stage, to end the evening!

What a way to end an evening!

You do&nbsp;NOT want to miss the next Acoustically Speaking!- Bank Holiday Monday- 25th April

Fun is not even the word!... I cant even think of a word!

&quot;Celebration&quot; is a good one, though!

Last night, the livest audience Acoustically Speaking had ever seen, meant that there couldnt be anything other than happiness and rocking out. 3 Generations, playing, singing and reciting, up and down tempo. Croydon rocked as the floor was opened up as a dance floor, Acoustically Speaking has not seen before.

OK... so it wasnt sooo Acoustic last night, but... it had to be a special occasion, to bid farewell to a founding member of NRN ( No Rehearsals Necessary- the house band's new name.)

We will all miss you, Alexon!

So... we won't have Alexon in March but... already, the artist list for March 20th, Acoustically Speaking at the Scream Lounge, is full and set to be amazing!

tickets...buy... advance...online... you know!

(now is a good time lol)

Acoustically Speaking, Sunday 30th January, 2011

It was the first Acoustically Speaking of the New Year and sure, to form, it went off with a bang!

There was freestyling, recitations, songs- old and new, bands and solo artists, covers and originals...

New members, Clarissa and Esther, both braved the stage, for the first and second time. The audience swayed on the currents of Esther's BEAUTIFUL sweet, soft tones. Noone could escape being moved by the passion of Clarissa's exciting, skilled and strong performance!

<a href="./jayjay.cfm" target="_new">Jay Jay spoke and sang from paper, and the top of her head! No surprise, that had something to do with Kocoa ; )

Ofcourse, Kocoa and The Boys were brilliant, with their distinctive sounds, carrying the evening and supporting the acts.

And we were all proud to be in the presence of up and coming band- Rosie and the Glass Balloon.

FRESH is the word!...as well New, other worldly, honest, cute... you have to hear them for yourself!

What a wonderful night!
Can't wait for the next one!

When it rains, even when it snows! The Eclectic Arts Network is always ready to break out in song, dance, poetry...

When Croydon had almost frozen to&nbsp;a hault, it was sunshine, as usual, at Acoustically Speaking- the last Acoustically Speaking of the year!

Gracing the stage was CRE8TIV Voice, Jay Jay, The Boys and Kocoa Brown!

What a way to end the year!

Ofcourse, there was a festive flavour,&nbsp;with songs of rememberance of the reason for the season: Yeshua AKA Jesus,&nbsp;the Christ, AKA Immanuel ( The AKA list could go on forever!)

Thank You to all the artists who have shared their talents with us, this year; for all who attended the events and shows, listening supporting, encouraging... introducing us to new styles of laugher... sharing your body heat!

Thank You

The Eclectic Arts Network wishes everyone a wonderful Christmas and a creatively abundant,
Grace-filled New Year!

Where else in the world would you find a blacked&nbsp;out rock band, admiringly commenting on&nbsp;children singing gospel on stage, whilst an African artist displayed paintings on bark, opposite a&nbsp;table full of cup cakes???

Seriously, if you can find this mix, anywhere else on the planet, &nbsp;please email in! It was brilliant and they tasted wonderful!

3 Bands
1 Choir
2 Soulful Singers
1 Poet
and a Legend

The room was on fire... not real fire- it was just very cool... if you know what i mean ;)

Again, I really must state- book your tickets and tables online! for the next Acoustically Speaking event- Sunday 19th December

It was not only another fabulous night at Acoustically Speaking... it was also another night to join in the birthday celebrations of EAN's very own- Kocoa Brown!!

For the first time, Kocoa, the Host, played a set of her own, joining the talented artists&nbsp;who graced our stage this month:
<a target="_new" href="./jayjay.cfm">Jay Jay
<a target="_new" href="./lukestanley.cfm">Luke Stanley
<a target="_new" href="./stevieblu.cfm">Stevie Blu
The Ranger
<a target="_new" href="./danielmaitland.cfm">Daniel Maitland
Clarissa

There was poetry, jazz, rap, reggae, rock... if you weren't there... yes... you DID, indeed,&nbsp;miss out!

I wont&nbsp;even speak about THE HOUSE BAND! These legends had the whole place rocking! Furniture had to be taken out to make room for people to dance!

If you didn't come- yes... you DID, indeed, miss out!

If you can think of a great name for the house band... email it in! No prizes... its just cool!

Buy your tickets early!- Sunday 28th November!

Acoustically Speaking- Sunday 26th September- Wow!

What a fantastic evening!

Acoustically Speaking is really becoming the big thing in town. So many people!

No doubt, news had spread about the new food feature-&nbsp; Jaz Potter and Nibbles were in the house with amazing Cupcakes, Samosas, Mandazi, Bombay Mix...

But... it was, surely, the incredible acts that&nbsp;the audience, literally, crowded in for! Tables had to be taken out to make room!

Little Blue Light rocked the house, as well as Holly and&nbsp;Megan, <a target="_new" href="./kayo.cfm">Kayo and Lil' Saint&nbsp;and individual artists,&nbsp;Chris, <a target="_new" href="./jayjay.cfm">Jay Jay, Jerome and <a target="_new" href="./stevieblu.cfm">Stevie Blu. The Audience will&nbsp;never forget&nbsp;COLIN! ( you had to be there to understand why lol)

And [oh my gosh!] the House Band! ( please&nbsp;read the &quot;oh my gosh&quot; again). So talented, they seemed to be able to play anything, very well! The host- Kocoa&nbsp;Brown- &nbsp;was brilliant, as always!

It would be a wise idea to buy tickets early and online for the next&nbsp;Acoustically Speaking.&nbsp;Oh! Reserve a&nbsp;table because they are VERY limited!
&nbsp;
Acoustically Speaking is getting BIG!!

But... it was, surely, the incredible acts that the audience, literally, crowded in for! Tables had to be taken out to make room!

Little Blue Light rocked the house, as well as Holly and Megan, Kayo and Lil' Saint and individual artists, Chris, Jay Jay, Jerome and Stevie Blu. The Audience will never forget COLIN! ( you had to be there to understand why lol)

And [oh my gosh!] the House Band! ( please read the "oh my gosh" again). So talented, they seemed to be able to play anything, very well! The host- Kocoa Brown- was brilliant, as always!

It would be a wise idea to buy tickets early and online for the next Acoustically Speaking. Oh! Reserve a table because they are VERY limited!

Acoustically Speaking is getting BIG!!

The rhythms and tones of Kocoa, Jnr Keys and Stevie Blu ushered in, yet another night celebrating beauty and creativity. We were reminded of the genius of artists who have inspired generations and were honoured to share in the original light of the artists in our midst. A cocktail of styles and forms quenched and healed, rested and revitalised, warmed and soothed.

Performances on the night from:

Elaine Joseph
Lyndon Johnson
Bluntation
Orlando Bolt
Kayo &amp; Abs
Leah Longville
Collin Hills
Kelly Agbowu

Connections and re-connections ensued, during the break, as the audience converse the hues, scents and vibes of the venue, the diversity of artists, the family Spirit. Some were found realising concepts in the mind onto card at The Card-Making table.

In support of the charity Music4Children, with no price tags, the Karma Stall offered the opportunity to exercise one&rsquo;s own discretion. Customers chose how much they wanted to give for their purchases, mostly made by widows and orphans in Nepal.

There&rsquo;s no doubt, Croydon awaits Monday 9th August, for

Acoustically Speaking: The Special

Thank You's!

The EAN Team would like to express our gratitude to Aide for the amazing venue, with a shout-out, to John, who helped lug tables and chairs up stairs! Thanks to Gabby for keeping all involved fuelled up and replenished, throughout the night.

Scream Lounge, we salute you for your space, for your care, for your support!

To all the artists who performed, thank you.

Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine!
